Switzerland food journey

Switzerland is a mountainous Central European country, home to numerous lakes, villages and the high peaks of the Alps. Its cities contain medieval quarters, with landmarks like capital Bern’s Zytglogge clock tower and Lucerne’s wooden chapel bridge. The country is also known for its ski resorts and hiking trails. Banking and finance are key industries, and Swiss watches and chocolate are world renowned

Cheese fondue is a great meal with friends and perhaps one of the most iconic foods that people relate to Switzerland. It’s a dish made of melted cheese (gruyère and emmentaler) and other ingredients, such as garlic, white wine, a little cornflour/corn starch and often kirsch (cherry brandy), served up at the table in a special ceramic pot called a caquelon, with a small burner underneath it to keep the fondue at constant temperature. You spear small cubes of bread onto long-stemmed forks and dip them into the hot cheese (taking care not to lose the bread in the fondue). The term ‘fondue’ has come to describe other dishes where food is dipped into a pot of hot liquid, such as fonduebourguignonne (beef cooked in hot oil) and chocolate fondue.

There are many regional dishes in Switzerland. One example is Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, thin strips of veal with mushrooms in a cream sauce served with Rösti. Italian cuisine is popular in contemporary Switzerland, particularly pasta and pizza. ... The most popular cheese dishes are fondue and raclette.

And the Swiss typically reach for full-fat, no-sugar-added varieties, which can be more filling and easier for the body to digest. But Rosenthal says it's not just the Swiss food that matters — it's the fresh Alps atmosphere
